Built to last, they’re versatile enough to double as linen or toy storage and make practical (and pretty) decor gifts for those empty spaces around the house.

Perhaps best of all, a stunning laundry basket makes you feel better about getting jobs done around the home. And who knows, it might even inspire the kids to pick up their clothes. We did say ‘might’.

What style of laundry basket is best?

If you are looking for a laundry basket or hamper and wondering which one is the best to buy, you have a lot of choices!  Before you start your search, we recommend considering the following questions:

Who will be using it?

The size of your household is going to determine the size that you need. Look for a laundry basket that will hold at least three days’ worth of dirty laundry easily.

What colour should you go with?

From dark tones to match your black bathroom vanity to a natural hue that pairs perfectly with your bath caddy, there are options for every interior style under the sun. The most important thing is to pick something you love – because you’ll see it a lot!

Where will it live?

If it’s visible to everyone, we suggest choosing a basket that ties in with the overall style of your home.  For a beachy aesthetic, natural fibres look beautiful with similar materials, like a rattan bedhead. If your home is more traditional, perhaps a wooden basket with a dark stain will work. A luxe laundry basket is usually more expensive, but given that it doubles as designer decor, it’s worth every cent.

We also highly recommend choosing a lidded basket whenever possible if your laundry basket is going to be anywhere on display.  At least then you won’t be worrying about eyeballs falling on your dirty washing.

If your hamper is going to sit inside cabinets with your clothes airer and other laundry essentials, you may like to go for a simpler solution like a traditional plastic basket or a canvas hamper.

How often do you do the washing?

If you like to wash every day then you can certainly afford to buy a smaller laundry basket.  Our only advice would be to give yourself a bit of breathing space and go slightly larger than you think you’ll need just in case you get busy or the rain sets in.  There’s nothing worse than a house strewn with dirty clothes reminding you of all the jobs you have left to do.

For those who prefer to wash less often, go large!  Look for a big, sturdy basket that can take a mountain of laundry without tipping, bulging or busting.

Where should you put the laundry basket?

This comes down to the way you like to run your ship.  The ideal location for a laundry basket is where the dirty clothes first come off!  This gives everyone no excuse to leave their clothes anywhere but in the basket.

If you have small children who undress in the bathroom before a wash, keep your basket right next to your family bathtub. This way, kids can pop their clothes into the hamper – remember, good habits start early!

For families with older kids, try a shared laundry basket in a central area near their rooms.  Or if you are training them to be self-sufficient, give them a basket each in their rooms and get them to take responsibility for their laundry.

It’s all down to personal choice and what works for you.  Try a few scenarios until you find the right laundry basket setup that works for you.

  • Gorgeous! I love Joseph and Jospeh products. They are always made so well, look great and are extremely functional. I love their laundry basket and how it has the two compartments for darks and whites and it looks really nice. I also like the laundry basket on legs as they could hinder a few creepy crawlies finding their way into the basket.

  • There are some really good designs there, but also some very impractical ones. My current one is a bamboo style, I think we got it from somewhere like Target and they are a flimsy design. I do like ones that separate lights and darks though. I have one of those for my ensuite and it’s great not having to separate everything manually before I do a load.

  • I was so amazed by how beautiful and stylish some of these laundry baskets are. All of these would be a welcome addition to my laundry from what I have today. A huge improvement to the plastic basket I currently use. My favourite basket from this collection would have to be the collapsible bamboo basket, it is simple yet stylish in design and look. I might have to look at upgrading my current basket to something more modern.

  • I just adore the Joseph Joseph Tota Laundry Seperation Baskets. Genius design with the handles for easy collection. It’s stylish and functional. I have a Whicker basket with a fabric bag I sewed, which looks stylish and fits well, but is such a hassle to keep dust out of in between the woven wood. Definitely something to consider in the future when picking out another

  • Gosh some of these are stunning. Definitely come along way from the regular old plastic laundry bin i grew up with. My favourite one would have to be the Brabantia Bo Laundry Bin. It’s so sleek and stylish and would fit right into my home! Love that its corrosion resistant too which will make it last longer than some others – especially dirty or wet laundry going in
