Hello!

If you need to add a little extra comfort to your favourite room or armchair, luxury blankets are the answer.

Designer blankets are some of life’s little luxuries. But just because they’re more commonly used for decor rather than warmth doesn’t mean they skimp on quality. From cashmere to alpaca wool, these exquisite wares are more like heirloom pieces, expertly made to look amazing for years. (As long as no one spills their soup on it!)

We’ve done the digging and unearthed a shortlist of luxury throw blankets from esteemed local and international designers. But first, here are some tried and tested tips for choosing a quality blanket.

How do I choose a good quality blanket?

Choosing luxury blankets is easy once you establish the following:

  • Set a budget and stick to it!
  • Look for a timeless print and versatile colour for maximum longevity
  • Establish exactly what size works for your space (if in doubt, go bigger!)
  • Know beforehand which materials you’ll be happy with (consider allergies)
  • Consider what method of cleaning works for you and be aware that not all luxury throws are machine-washable
  • Finalise your colour choice based on the room and what it lives on (for example, a decorative ladder, sofa or bed).

FAQs

What is the most expensive blanket in the world?

Antique Navajo blankets are known as one of the most expensive in the world due to the time that went into making them and their scarcity today. A 2018 story explained that a Californian man sold his heirloom Navajo blanket at auction for US$2 million!

Considerably less expensive, but still an eye-watering amount, are Brunello Cucinelli’s Italian-made cashmere blankets, which retail at up to AU$10,000 each.

What is the comfiest blanket material?

The comfiest blanket material comes down to personal preference, but among the top favourites are cashmere, lambswool, alpaca wool and mohair. Premium sustainable cotton is also always a favourite, particularly for those in warmer climates or with sensitivity to animal products.
