Ready to beat the heat without relying on the air conditioner? Ceiling fans are the solution, and to help you find the right ones quicker, we’ve put a shortlist of Australia’s best ceiling fans in one handy spot. You’re welcome.

It’s often not until you’ve stayed somewhere with ceiling fans that you begin to understand just how useful they are. They reduce the household’s reliance on energy-guzzling air conditioners, they keep air flowing through the house and help everyone finally get some sleep during heatwaves. With reverse rotation, they also push warm air downward and help keep homes warm in winter.

But it’s not all function and no flair with these handy fixtures, they’re also a practical way to add style points to rooms and extra value to your home.

How to choose a ceiling fan

  • How big is your room? The size of ceiling fans you need depends on the room size. For standard bedrooms around 3m x 3m, you will be looking for a small-sized fan. Larger rooms of 4m x 5m or greater will need a large fan.
  • Do you need a light? Ceiling fans with lights work very well in a room with no downlights; they essentially solve the issue of cooling and lighting with one product. But, if you already have permanent downlights installed, a light isn’t necessary on your fan.
  • Consider ceiling height – All fans come with a hanging rod and this usually suffices for standard ceilings in Australia of 2.4m. But, if you have very low or quite high ceilings, you may require a low-profile fab or one with extension rods. (Also keep in mind that your fan needs to be at least 2.1m from the floor according to Australian Standard AS 4226-2008, section 12.5.3.
  • Blade pitch matters – The higher a blade pitch (measured in angles), the more air a ceiling fan moves. For example, blades with a 10° pitch move more air than blades with a 5° pitch.
  • Motor – AC motors are cheaper, but usually noisier than DC motors.
  • Materials – Plastic is popular because it’s quiet and usually cheaper than other materials. Metal is often used for heavy-duty fans and tends to have a higher price point. Timber and timber-look blades are also popular for their earthy aesthetic.

Note: In Australia, ceiling fans must be installed by a qualified electrician.

What types of ceiling fans are there?

  • Smart ceiling fans – With wifi connectivity. smart fans allow you to control them from an app on your device.
  • Low profile fans – Also known as ‘flush-mount fans’, this style sits closer to the ceiling and helps in cases where the ceiling height is below average.
  • Outdoor ceiling fans – Designed for covered patios and terraces, these use more robust ‘all-weather’ materials than indoor ceiling fans and can be more expensive.
  • Ceiling fans with lights – With a light positioned at their centre, these fans are a great option for rooms without downlights or spaces that need extra light.
  • Ceiling fans with remotes – Don’t want to get off the couch or out of bed to turn off the fan? A remote is the answer!

FAQs

Is there an optimum number of blades for ceiling fans?

Many household fans in Australia have 4 or 5 blades, which is considered suitable for regular homes. A fan with more blades may run a little quieter, but it can put more strain on the motor.

What’s the best material for a ceiling fan?

Plastic is one of the most popular materials for ceiling fans because it’s less noisy and often has a lower price point than timber and metal options.

Are ceiling fans worth it?

Without any doubt, ceiling fans are a worthwhile investment. They are more economical and energy efficient to run than air conditioners and they provide all-year comfort to homes of any size.

What’s better out of AC or DC ceiling fans?

AC and DC just refer to the type of current used to run your fan. AC options have been around and tend to be more economical than DC options. However, if energy efficiency, low noise and contemporary features are a priority for you, a DC ceiling fan could be the way to go.
