If you need to add a little luxury to your favourite room or armchair, designer blankets and throws are the answer.

There’s no doubt about it: designer blankets and throws are some of life’s little luxuries. And just because they’re more commonly used for decor rather than warmth doesn’t mean they skimp on quality.

From pure cashmere to ultra-soft alpaca wool, these exquisite wares are worthy of heirloom pieces, expertly made to look amazing for years (as long as no one spills their soup on it!).

How do I choose a good quality blanket?

Choosing designer blankets is easy once you establish the following:

  • Set a budget and stick to it!
  • Look for a timeless print and versatile colour for maximum longevity
  • Establish exactly what size works for your space (if in doubt, go bigger!)
  • Know beforehand which materials you’ll be happy with (consider allergies)
  • Consider what method of cleaning works for you and be aware that not all luxury throws are machine-washable
  • Finalise your colour choice based on the room and what it lives on (for example, a decorative ladder, sofa or bed).

FAQs

What is the most expensive blanket in the world?

Antique Navajo blankets are known as one of the most expensive in the world due to the time that went into making them and their scarcity today. A 2018 story explained that a Californian man sold his heirloom Navajo blanket at auction for US$2 million!

Considerably less expensive, but still an eye-watering amount, are Brunello Cucinelli’s Italian-made cashmere blankets, which retail at up to AU$10,000 each.

What is the comfiest blanket material?

The comfiest blanket material comes down to personal preference, but among the top favourites are cashmere, lambswool, alpaca wool and mohair. Premium sustainable cotton is also always a favourite, particularly for those in warmer climates or with sensitivity to animal products.

  • I never knew how expensive throws could be until i was looking for one myself! I couldnt believe the prices of good quality throws and couldnt appreciate them until i was shopping. Ive found an incredible one now that is timeless and suits my decor from Weave. I can see another Weave option on this article too which makes me do a little happy dance! Quality that will last over time is something I treasure now as i get older.

  • Absolutely stunning options here. I adore Marino wool and it would make the most lush couch blanket. The Tiffany blanket is cute, I love their signature colour proudly on display. Many beautiful pieces. In this current qld chilly weather I’d take them all!

    Reply

  • Oh yes….noting beats a comfy throw or two on the couch. We have two and I absolutely love them. So handy to pop over the legs when it starts to get a little chilly and I also fold them onto the lounge when the dogs are inside to help protect the lounge. I love how they give a pop of colour and can lift the room. I have had a mohair one in the past but found that it ‘shed’ a lot. I love a cozy soft one.
