How to choose a ceiling fan
- How big is your room? The size of ceiling fans you need depends on the room size. For standard bedrooms around 3m x 3m, you will be looking for a small-sized fan. Larger rooms of 4m x 5m or greater will need a large fan.
- Do you need a light? Ceiling fans with lights work very well in a room with no downlights; they essentially solve the issue of cooling and lighting with one product. But, if you already have permanent downlights installed, a light isn’t necessary on your fan.
- Consider ceiling height – All fans come with a hanging rod and this usually suffices for standard ceilings in Australia of 2.4m. But, if you have very low or quite high ceilings, you may require a low-profile fab or one with extension rods. (Also keep in mind that your fan needs to be at least 2.1m from the floor according to Australian Standard AS 4226-2008, section 12.5.3.
- Blade pitch matters – The higher a blade pitch (measured in angles), the more air a ceiling fan moves. For example, blades with a 10° pitch move more air than blades with a 5° pitch.
- Motor – AC motors are cheaper, but usually noisier than DC motors.
- Materials – Plastic is popular because it’s quiet and usually cheaper than other materials. Metal is often used for heavy-duty fans and tends to have a higher price point. Timber and timber-look blades are also popular for their earthy aesthetic.
