RenovatingZou House: Modern Family Living In Brisbane

From husband and wife duo, Christal and Chris Fysentzou of Zoubuild comes Zou House: a fresh, gabled family home with a nod to their original Queenlander.

Located in Greenslopes, Brisbane, the inspiration for the stunning two-storey build stemmed from the couple’s love of minimalist Scandi style and Mediterranean colour palettes. The objective was to build a low-maintenance home with loads of light and all the functionality a family home needs.

“We have always loved the minimalistic style of the Scandinavian design for the external façade and are equally drawn to the tones of the Mediterranean, so it’s a combination of both. Throughout the design process we blended organic, earthy textures with a simple Scandinavian aesthetic and the calm of a Grecian colour palette – we’re absolutely thrilled with the result,” says Christal.

A Home With The Works

The sophisticated five-bedder features a grand Mediterranean-inspired entrance, three bathrooms, a swimming pool, a garden and an adaptable outdoor space equipped with Luxaflex awnings for entertaining all year round. Plus, there’s even room to fit four vehicles in the driveway. All this on a regular suburban block.

A Celebration Of Light

But despite the smart use of design, decor and colour, it’s the abundance of natural light that makes Zou House shine so brightly. Floor-to-ceiling windows, strategically placed skylights and the striking peaked glass facade allow daylight to flood the home. It’s both serene and livable – the perfect balance for long-term family living.

Motorised Luxaflex shades and semi-sheer curtains filter the natural light and provide the privacy that a family home needs. And in crisp white, they enhance the cosy and inviting interior vibe.

“The combination of Luxaflex® shades and semi-sheer curtains finish the room elegantly, allowing for privacy without compromising the beautiful fluctuations of natural light. We have also gone motorised with the majority of our Luxaflex® window furnishings to add another element of luxury and ease,” says Christal.

“We love how beautifully the curtains complement the chosen blinds, and the ability to automate the products. With Luxaflex® Window Coverings each room has a window finishing with a specific purpose that enhances the space.” says Christal.

And The Beauty Of Curves

Curved walls were made possible throughout the home with Gyprock Flexible, an affordable, lightweight plasterboard specifically designed to bend. Not only does it bring architectural interest to rooms, but it also creates a harmonious flow throughout the house.

“We have a lot of curves in the house so using Gyprock Flexible made these spaces easy to sheet. Also, having used Gyprock over a number of projects, we know it is a quality product that would enable us to achieve the desired level of finish,” explains Crystal.

A curved wall is a feature of the master bedroom, creating a divider between the sleeping zone and the ensuite. Paired with rounded boucle chairs in a natural shade, it’s a retreat that welcomes with open arms.

The kitchen continues the story of curves with a feature island bench. And the living and dining space features a curved ceiling and a round coffee table.

“This one was probably the hardest project to date that we have completed and having so many challenges along the way with supply and trade issues, weather as well as COVID, the end result is very much worth it,” says Christal.
